If you have the money, there's no reason you shouldn't buy a new car. However, this isn't the case for everyone, and for some, purchasing a used car is the only option. If you want to get the best value for your money, consider the following factors.
1. Exterior Condition
The exterior condition of the car reveals a lot about its overall health. Typically, those who keep the interior of their car tidy also take care of the car as a whole.
- Check for any fading, scratches, dents, or waves.
- Waves on the car's surface may indicate a fresh paint job, which could suggest a previous accident.
2. Rust
Inspect every area for signs of corrosion, especially if the car is over five years old. The UAE is known for its harsh conditions, which can exacerbate existing rust issues.
Pay attention to the thresholds, front and rear fenders, under the doors, and both the front and rear bumpers. If you hear a crunching sound when gently pressing on any metal panel, it may signal advanced corrosion.
3. Mileage
The mileage is the first question you should ask when buying a used car, as it indicates the vehicle's age.
- Choose a car with mileage that is equal to or less than 30,000 kilometers per year of its age.
- If the car is older, say 10 years, and has low mileage, this doesn't necessarily indicate good quality.
- If possible, check the maintenance and service history.
4. Engine Condition
A dirty engine suggests that the car has been neglected, while an overly clean engine might indicate that it has been cleaned to hide an issue.
Check the oil color and coolant level, start the engine, and note any unusual noises during operation. It should run smoothly without any undesirable sounds.
5. Vehicle History
It's crucial to check the history of the used car, especially if it's an imported vehicle. If the owner or dealer has a service record, make sure to review it.
Verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), particularly if the car is imported from the United States. This number is usually printed on the dashboard, and you can quickly check it online to see if the vehicle has been in any accidents.
6. Gulf Specifications
Whenever possible, stick to cars that comply with Gulf specifications, as these vehicles tend to provide greater long-term comfort.
Some imported cars may lack essential features for driving conditions in the UAE, such as radiators, air conditioning units, and filtration systems, which could lead to rapid deterioration of the vehicle.
