Know the Basic Steps
Even if you're not driving your car, it may still encounter issues like a dead battery. Therefore, make it a point to start the engine for a few minutes from time to time to prevent problems.
- Battery: It's essential to run the engine for 15 minutes each week and make sure to park your car in an open or well-ventilated area.
- Brakes: Be sure to start the car and move it within the parking area while using the brakes weekly. If your car is parked on relatively flat ground, release the handbrake. This helps prevent rust buildup on brake rotors.
- Windshield Wipers: If your car is left outdoors for an extended period, dust, dirt, and dried soap can accumulate on the blades. Clean the wiper blades with a lint-free cloth or a paper towel dampened with windshield washer fluid.
- Fuel: Letting your car run out of fuel while parked can harm the fuel pump. Keep your fuel tank at least half full.
Check the Tires
- Tire Flattening: All tires are susceptible to partial flattening if the vehicle is not moved or driven for a long time. These flat spots can increase the car's vibrations. To avoid this issue, regularly check tire pressure and rotate the tires at least 90 degrees.
- Tire Condition: To inspect the tread lines of the tire, check the tread wear indicators found in most tires. These indicators are usually located below the raised sections in several areas of the tire. When the tread depth gets close to the level of these indicators, it's time to replace the tires.
- Spare Tire: Don’t forget to check the spare tire and the tire inflation kit.
Clean the Exterior
- Washing the Car: This is the perfect time to take care of your vehicle. If you haven't washed it in a while, hand wash it using a car-specific cleaner.
- Avoid Dish Soap: Do not use dish soap as it strips the wax layer that protects the paint.
- Avoid Scented Wipes: Avoid using scented wipes or those that contain bleach, as they have been found to damage screens and leather.
