Ferrari just filed a patent for a new V12 engine design with oval, or "stadium-shaped," pistons. The new process should make engines smaller and more powerful, and it *might* also allow us to keep the old V12 on the roads for a bit longer, even with stricter emissions regulations on the horizon.
Design and Benefits
The pistons in traditional engines are cylindrical, but the new Ferrari engine employs pistons with longer oval shapes. This allows the pistons to nest deeper within the engine block, reducing the length of the engine. A shorter engine can have a number of benefits, including improved weight distribution and the ability to add hybrid components without necessarily increasing the size of the powertrain.
Moreover, the new piston design can minimize friction on cylinder walls, which will maximize mechanical efficiency. Such minimization of friction internally can result in increased power output and improved fuel efficiency, in line with Ferrari's focus on performance and environmental friendliness.
Historical Context
The non-round piston concept is not new whatsoever. Honda had experimented with oval pistons on the NR500 motorcycle in the late 1970s to utilize in Grand Prix racing. The production problem and off-performance outcomes, however, prevented the utilization of this form of design from experiencing widespread use.
Manufacturing technology such as 3D printing and high-precision machining has since then progressed, perhaps correcting the production fabrication problems encountered beforehand. The advancement in technology would then make Ferrari's oval-piston V12 engine more practical for mass production and performance enhancement.
Implications for Ferrari's Future
It would be patented as Ferrari's dedication to taking internal combustion engine design to its limits as the automobile industry makes the move to electrification. A cleaner, more efficient V12 engine could allow Ferrari to preserve its distinctive engine geometries but grow to satisfy modern performance and legislational demands.
While this patent application in no means assures that this oval-piston V12 will ever make it into production, it does indicate Ferrari's innovative solution to engineering challenges. If produced, this engine would be a new standard for supercars by delivering old-school power with today's technology.
