Front Wheel Drive vs Rear Wheel Drive

There are front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive cars with each configuration having its own set of advantages and disadvantages. This article will discuss the first two.

In a nutshell, front-wheel-drive means the engine drives only the front wheels and rear-wheel-drive means the engine pushes power to only the rear wheels. But, it isn’t as straightforward as that.

Front-Wheel-Drive

Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport

Front-wheel-drive is a common configuration for compact cars because of the minimal space required by the system since the engine and wheels are near each other. A higher chassis or a center tunnel is not required. Front-wheel-drive cars are, therefore, generally cheaper. The front-wheel system also allows more traction making it a better choice when driving through mud, snow, or wet roads.

Benefits:

- Larger interior space

- Less weight

- Lower manufacturing cost leading to a smaller price tag

- More efficient drivetrain

- Center of gravity in front allows improved traction

- Handles more predictably

Drawbacks:

- Pulls to the left or right when accelerating due to the poorer torque

- Limited acceleration due to weight shifting deficiency

- Poorer traction when climbing on inclined, slippery roads

- A bigger turning radius because the movement of the front wheels is limited by the transverse engine

- Restricted engine size

Rear-Wheel-Drive

Rear Wheel Drive

Rear-wheel-drive is the ideal choice for performance and luxury cars since the rear wheels get the accelerating force and the front wheels are dedicated to steering and nothing else. The down force then increases because of the load transfer during acceleration and makes the rear tires take on simultaneous curving and acceleration better than front tires.

Rear-wheel-drive allows for bigger engines because the drivetrain is not located at the front. However, rear-wheel-drive cars are generally bigger than their front-wheel counterparts because of the requirement for the drive tunnel, thus a higher chassis.

Benefits:

- More equal distribution of weight

- Improved weight transfer when accelerating

- Smaller turning radius

- Handles better on dry roads

- Has more towing power

- Can be configured for bigger and more powerful engines

Drawbacks:

- It is prone to oversteer during hard acceleration

- Poorer traction on gravel or sand

- Smaller interior space because of the drive tunnel and drivetrain

- Generally, costs more than front-wheel-drive cars

- Reaching the rear wheels requires a longer driveshaft

Each drive configuration has its own benefits and drawbacks. Choosing one over the other will depend on how the car will be used. If faster acceleration is desired, a rear-wheel-drive system will provide more torque. However, front-wheel-drive cars are better in handling loads inside the trunk. Of course, there are four-wheel and all-wheel-drive systems that combine the best of both worlds.
