Hyundai Ioniq Electric Achieves Top Environmental Rating
Environmental Performance Assessment
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric has received the highest possible rating in the official new car environmental performance assessment. In its inaugural cycle, the Sustainable New Car Assessment Program (Green NCAP), supported by the European New Car Assessment Program, evaluated 12 vehicles from 9 global manufacturers through tests designed to reflect real-world driving conditions. The Hyundai Ioniq achieved the program's top rating of five stars, sharing this honor with the BMW i3.
Testing Details
In the details of the assessments, the Hyundai Ioniq scored a perfect ten points in the clean air index and received 8.5 out of ten in the energy efficiency index, which reflects the vehicle's ability to convert its energy source into kinetic energy. This index includes several factors such as:
- Energy loss rate in generating kinetic power
- Air resistance
- Tire friction
- Vehicle weight
All these factors impact the amount of energy the vehicle needs for optimal movement.
Statements from Officials
Mike Song, Head of Operations at Hyundai Middle East and Africa, emphasized that Hyundai is making substantial investments to achieve significant milestones in sustainable transportation. He stated, "Receiving such an advanced rating for one of Hyundai's models from prestigious entities brings us great satisfaction and joy, confirming our success in reaching the sustainability levels that have always been among our key goals for Hyundai vehicles."
Energy Efficiency and Emissions
The program highlighted in the test results of the Ioniq that, as a fully electric vehicle, it achieved zero thermal emissions, along with a very good energy efficiency level. The tests indicated that the energy consumption did not exceed 20 kilowatt-hours to travel 100 kilometers across all assessments, including high-load tests on highways. This confirms that fully electric propulsion is the most sustainable and economical option currently available for transportation.
Green NCAP Testing Program
The Green NCAP testing program included fully electric passenger vehicles as well as vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. It assessed emissions harmful to human health and the environment, alongside energy consumption efficiency rates. The program noted that it is developing testing programs to include hybrid vehicles and plans to introduce new mechanisms in the future to incorporate greenhouse gases and full life cycle ratings for vehicles, taking into account the environmental impact and energy used from the manufacturing stages onward.
