Protests by the Omani People
In February 2017, the Omani people protested against the continuously rising petrol prices by organizing a march outside the Ministry of Oil and Gas in Muscat. Although public pressure led to the establishment of a fixed price for regular petrol, with fluctuations in super petrol and diesel prices based on international demand, the economic conditions ultimately forced the Omani government to scrap its previous price of 186 baisa per liter.
Increase in Petrol Prices
The price of petrol was raised by 13 baisa from the previous rate, bringing the cost of M91 petrol to 199 baisa per liter nationwide, with monthly price adjustments based on global oil prices. To offset this increase, the Omani government introduced an assistance program targeting low-income citizens (earning less than 600 Omani rials per month), allowing them to purchase the first 200 liters of M91 petrol at a rate of 180 baisa per liter.
Petrol and Diesel Prices
The prices of M95 petrol and diesel reached 219 baisa per liter and 230 baisa per liter, respectively, which translates to an increase of 6 baisa per liter for petrol and 11 baisa per liter for diesel.
