Jaguar Land Rover Introduces Advanced Navigation Technology
Jaguar Land Rover is now offering customers precise navigation capabilities, even in remote areas. This makes them the first automotive manufacturer to integrate the global positioning system using a three-word address in existing vehicles via the SOTA program, which provides ongoing remote updates.
How Does the Three-Word Address Technology Work?
The "three-word address" system divides the globe into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, assigning each square a unique set of three words. With the always-on technology that operates without the need for a mobile connection, both current and new customers can easily navigate to any specified location worldwide using just three words.
SOTA System Updates
This feature is part of the latest upgrade to SOTA that has been rolled out to customers this year. In total, Jaguar Land Rover has completed over 1.3 million vehicle updates and more than three million engine control unit updates as part of its commitment to always-on connectivity, providing a modern luxury experience for customers.
Integration with Pivi Pro System
Once updated, the system allows customers to input three-word addresses directly into the navigation bar of the Pivi Pro Infotainment system. This integration has been delivered by HERE, Jaguar Land Rover’s navigation partner for the past 25 years. HERE's connected driving services include:
- Step-by-step navigation
- Real-time traffic updates
- On-street and off-street parking information
Service Availability
The three-word address feature is integrated into all new and existing Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles equipped with the advanced Pivi Pro infotainment system.

A Long-Term Partnership
Jaguar Land Rover has been collaborating with the three-word address system since 2018, when they developed three-word addresses to help improve healthcare management on the remote Scottish island of Mull.
