New Traffic Violations and Fines in the UAE 2023

Introduction

In an effort to reduce traffic accident fatalities and increase awareness among drivers, police across the UAE have implemented new traffic laws that came into effect on July 1st. Alongside its ambitious goal of achieving zero traffic-related deaths by 2020, the new laws impose stricter penalties for serious offenses such as speeding and using a mobile phone while driving.

Speeding Violations

• Exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 km/h: 300 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by up to 30 km/h: 600 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by up to 40 km/h: 700 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by up to 50 km/h: 1000 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by up to 60 km/h: 1500 AED + 6 black points + vehicle impoundment for 15 days
• Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h: 2000 AED + 12 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days
• Exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h: 3000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days

Reckless Driving Violations

• Using a mobile phone while driving: 800 AED + 4 black points
• Dangerous overtaking: 1000 AED + 4 black points
• Obstructing traffic: 1000 AED + 6 black points
• Running a red light: 1000 AED + 12 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days
• Endangering others' lives: 2000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days
• Driving without a license plate: 3000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 90 days

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Drugs

• Driving under the influence of alcohol: Maximum fine of 20,000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days
• Driving under the influence of drugs: Vehicle impoundment for 60 days + driving license suspension for one year + fine and imprisonment determined by the court

Safety Violations

• Not wearing a seatbelt: 400 AED + 4 black points
• Driving on worn-out tires: 500 AED + 4 black points + vehicle impoundment for one week
• Driving with expired insurance or registration: 500 AED + 4 black points + vehicle impoundment for one week
• Exceeding 50% tinting on windows: 1500 AED
• Driving a noisy vehicle: 2000 AED + 6 black points
• Illegally transporting passengers: 3000 AED + 24 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days

Road Etiquette

• Crossing the road in violation of traffic rules: 400 AED
• Tailgating and not maintaining a safe distance: 400 AED + 4 black points
• Littering while driving: 1000 AED + 6 black points
• Improper overtaking: 1000 AED + 6 black points
• Using an ATV on the road: 3000 AED + vehicle impoundment for 90 days
