The DeltaWing, an experiment in the world of LeMans, was designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and allow marginally faster speeds while bearing half as much weight. As the name rightly suggests, the exterior resembles a delta wing, with an extremely narrow front track of just 0.6 meters and a significantly wider rear track of 1.7 meters.

But since working with Nissan and debuting in 2012, it looks like the idea of a road car is well under way. In a race to produce a delta wing for the general public, Nissan revealed its BladeGlider concept, and it sure is striking.

First debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013, the BladeGlider is believed to make do with a zero emissions powertrain. While the McLaren F1-style seating position has been carried over, what’s exciting is that according to Nissan, the BladeGlider seen in these pictures is a fully working prototype which is set to make its first public appearance at the Olympic Games in Rio.

Although a prototype, the BladeGlider seems production-ready to us. Subtle tweaks have inched it closer to reality, while Williams Advanced Engineering has created its 268 horsepower powertrain. While it may be a while before the BladeGlider becomes a reality, we’re definitely looking forward to it!
