The Nissan Juke has never been one to follow the tried and tested path. Targeted at the youth, the Juke has always embraced its quirky, out-of-the-box style and attitude. As the Japanese brand prepares for the unveil of the all-new second-generation Juke, the word on the grapevine is that it is making way for greener engines, an all-new platform, and a hybrid version, too.

Nissan's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, has claimed that while the trend-setting Juke will remain edgy and less mainstream, it will still be recognizable as a Juke. From an aesthetic standpoint, that would translate to the new model retaining cues such as the high-mounted headlights and prominent wheel arches which were introduced by its predecessor.

While the Juke currently utilizes the B0 architecture—which is essentially the stretched chassis off a 2002 Nissan Micra—the all-new model will switch to the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s newest Common Module Family chassis, CMF-B. This transition will not only open up the capability to experiment with new engines, including a 1.6-liter unit with figures in the range of 190 horsepower, but will also address a pressing issue: rear legroom.

Sources at Nissan have also hinted that the all-new Juke could have its line-up extended with a hybrid variant. While it may utilize the range-extender powertrain featured on the Gripz Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Nakamura is quoted as saying: “It is very tough to meet our emission requirements without hybrid. It is almost mandatory.”
