The new material consists of simple components, featuring an intricate structure and a plastic membrane that control air vibrations to minimize the transmission of broad frequency bands (500-1200 Hz), such as engine and road noise.
Weight and Cost Efficiency
Currently, most materials used for isolating this frequency range are heavy rubber sheets. In contrast, Nissan's new sound insulation material weighs only one-quarter of that, while providing the same level of sound isolation.
Production Costs
The production cost of this new material is comparable to existing materials, and even better due to its simple structure. As a result, this material can be used in vehicles where sound insulation materials are currently limited due to cost or weight constraints.
History and Development of the Technology
Nissan began its research into exceptional materials technology in 2008, initially using it for highly sensitive antennas in electromagnetic wave research. The company has since expanded the application of this technology to include sound waves, leading to the successful innovation of the new material.
