Range Rover Velar: A Luxurious Driving Experience

Discover the stunning design and performance of the Range Rover Velar.

Driving Experience of the Range Rover Velar

Introduction

Today, we will explore the Range Rover Velar, a model positioned between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. This vehicle represents Land Rover's attempt to keep pace with the evolving SUV market, especially with competitors like the Porsche Macan, Maserati Levante, and Mercedes GLC, along with its mechanical sibling, the Jaguar F-Pace.

Exterior Design

The Range Rover Velar embodies the sleek and athletic aesthetics we've come to expect from the Range Rover Sport, featuring smoother lines and a more streamlined silhouette. Its low, curved roof and smaller windows resemble those of the Evoque, while the overall technical appearance is highlighted by concealed door handles that pop out when needed.

At the rear, the Velar distinguishes itself from the Range Rover Sport with more extended, smaller tail lights, and large integrated exhaust outlets that enhance its sporty design.

Interior Design

The interior of the Range Rover Velar meets all expectations for a luxury SUV bearing the Range Rover name. The quality of materials used in our test model is outstanding, featuring two-tone stitched leather throughout the cabin and plush upholstery on the ceiling and pillars.

Adding a touch of elegance, glossy materials adorn the dashboard and doors, while the steering wheel showcases a two-tone leather design with metallic accents that elevate the cabin's luxury. The only noticeable plastic elements are found in the lower storage areas of the doors.

Technological Features and Safety

Range Rover Velar Technology Features

One of my favorite aspects of the Velar is its dual touchscreen setup on the dashboard, replacing most physical buttons. The upper screen controls the entertainment system, navigation, and connectivity. Speaking of entertainment, this version is equipped with a Meridian sound system featuring 23 speakers throughout the cabin, three of which are located in each door, delivering an unparalleled audio experience.

The lower touchscreen adds a delightful touch, not only functioning as a touch interface but also featuring two rotating dials that control various functions, with their purposes changing depending on the display mode.

However, during my two-day experience with the vehicle, I noted two drawbacks regarding the touchscreen usage. First, being a touchscreen means fingerprints accumulate quickly. Second, while these screens are fantastic when stationary, they become challenging to operate while driving without diverting attention from the road.

Moreover, the Velar doesn't stop at two screens; it also includes a third display in front of the driver, showcasing customizable information controlled via buttons on the steering wheel. These buttons are unique, featuring complete sections rather than separate keys, and they also support touch functionality, allowing for adaptable button roles based on user needs.

Other notable features in this Velar trim include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, potential collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and 360-degree cameras and sensors around the vehicle, along with an automatic parking assist system. The vehicle is also outfitted with automatic climate control for both front and rear passengers, a panoramic sunroof, and leather seats with heating and cooling functions, adjustable in 20 different ways. Despite listing these features, I am confident I may have overlooked some specifications available.

Driving Performance

Driving the Range Rover Velar

The Velar we are testing today is the R-Dynamic P 380, the sportiest version of the Velar. Its supercharged 3 liter V6 engine produces 380 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.

Now, let me share my thoughts on the Velar's driving experience. In Comfort mode, we achieve the smooth and quiet ride characteristic of any Range Rover, enhanced by the air suspension that effectively absorbs road imperfections.

However, as mentioned in the introduction, Land Rover's intention with the Velar is to compete with vehicles like the Porsche Macan and Maserati Levante. In Dynamic mode, we experience greater sensitivity in the accelerator and steering, but during my drive, the car did not provide the sporty feel I anticipated. While it is fast and capable of taking corners at high speeds, it lacks the excitement found in other vehicles in this category. The best way to describe its driving experience is that it is the most sporty offering from Range Rover.

Conclusion

Conclusion on Range Rover Velar

To enjoy this blend of luxury, elegance, and sportiness from Range Rover, you will need to invest significantly. While visiting the Land Rover website, I noticed an enticing starting price of 225,225 AED for the R-Dynamic version. However, once you opt for the P 380 engine, the price jumps to 290,955 AED. This is merely the base price, as numerous additional options such as color, leather quality, and various features can elevate the price by approximately 200,000 AED.

My advice for anyone considering the Range Rover Velar is to be aware of the specifications needed to suit their daily driving requirements.
