2018 Renault Koleos Review: A Stylish Compact SUV for Families
Introduction
The Renault Koleos is a familiar nameplate for those in the Middle East, having been associated with compact SUVs since 2007. The all-new second-generation model aims to compete with the likes of the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, and Toyota RAV4. While it may seem like a long shot, the Koleos has many impressive features.
Exterior
The 2018 Koleos showcases a bold design, following Renault's new design language. With sharp contours and chrome accents, it stands out in a crowded segment, making its design one of its strongest attributes.

Interior
Inside, the Koleos features a warm brown hue paired with a metallic grey exterior. It offers well-bolstered seats and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel for optimal comfort. The dual-zone A/C system, cooled cupholders, and spacious rear legroom enhance passenger comfort.
Features
The fully-loaded Renault Koleos is equipped with numerous features, including:
- Automated parallel and perpendicular parking
- Bose audio system
- Tesla-inspired infotainment screen
- Blind spot monitoring
- Cruise Control and speed limiter
However, the steering controls are awkwardly placed behind the steering wheel, making it challenging to operate the infotainment system while driving.

Drive
Built on the CMF-CD modular platform shared with the Nissan X-Trail, the Koleos is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 233 Nm of torque. It averages 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers, making it economical for families.
While the Koleos is not designed for heavy off-roading, it offers three drive modes (2WD, 4WD Auto, and 4WD Lock), making it suitable for family outings on various terrains.
Verdict
The Renault Koleos shares components with the more expensive Nissan X-Trail, offering excellent value for small families. With its attractive design, extensive technology features, and a price point around AED 15,000 – 20,000 lower than its competitors, the Koleos is a fantastic option.
