Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Concept - A Revolutionary PHEV SUV
Mitsubishi pulled out all the stops at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show when it showcased the impressive-looking Engelberg Tourer Concept. So named after a famous ski resort in Switzerland, the Engelberg Tourer is Mitsubishi's newest PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). This vehicle is significant for Mitsubishi as it is likely that the next-generation Pajero could be based on it, potentially leading to the development of an all-new generation of the Outlander crossover as well.
Design and Exterior Features
As we know, the outgoing Mitsubishi Pajero is over two decades old. However, it remains one of the brand’s best-selling models in various parts of the world. The Engelberg Tourer could very well be the next Pajero. The concept car itself is ready to enter any Discovery Channel exploration tour, showcasing modern and sophisticated exterior styling while retaining the boxy and upright stance of a no-nonsense SUV.
Front Fascia
The front fascia of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer incorporates:
- Brand’s signature ‘Dynamic Shield’ grille and bumper design
- Sleek LED daytime running lights
- Vertically stacked LED headlights
- Heavy-duty skid plate
- Integrated LED fog lights in a rooftop-mounted box
Side Profile and Rear Features
The tall and buff side profile emphasizes its adventure-ready attitude with:
- Generous ground clearance
- Flared wheel arches
- Large alloy rims
- Small extensions for digital wing mirrors
- Highly reflective chrome coating along the roof box
- Floating roof design
The rear features suave wraparound LED taillights and a large skid plate on the bumper.
Interior Features
The interior of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept looks spectacularly modern and upscale. The dual-tone cabin with black and white trim adds contrast and style, while gentle blue ambient lighting enhances the elegance and class. The Engelberg Tourer is designed as a three-row, six-seat SUV, offering spacious and comfortable seating for adults.
On the technology front, the SUV is equipped with:
- An all-digital HD driver’s display
- A large multimedia touch-infotainment screen
Advanced Navigation System
The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept features a touchscreen with one of the most advanced navigation systems ever installed in a car. Once the user enters a destination, the system calculates various factors including:
- Prevailing weather
- Road and traffic conditions
- Route topography
The system preselects the most suitable drive mode for the route, engaging the vehicle’s battery management computer to command precise torque output at each wheel. This maximizes efficiency and reduces drivetrain losses, ensuring optimum comfort for the occupants.
Performance and Powertrain
Under the hood of the Engelberg Tourer concept lies a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 20 kWh battery to form the PHEV system. This large SUV can run on electric power alone for up to 70 km. When combined with the internal combustion engine, the total range of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept extends to 700 km. The battery pack powers twin electric motors at the front and rear axles. For improved traction and stability on challenging surfaces, the Engelberg is equipped with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) and Active Yaw Control (AYC).
