The VW Bus is probably the most likeable vehicle ever - children, adults and how can we not mention the hippies! After quite an illustrious history, the VW microbus has made a comeback in EV form and it’s looking good.
Volkswagen says that this is the “new face of sustainability mobility”. Why? That’s because this is a zero-emissions bus which also has, ahem, vegan leather.
The ID.BUZZ is built on the MEB platform that underpins the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Skoda’s Enyaq. Thanks to this architecture, the Buzz’s battery pack is at the back which helps it in having a turning circle of just over 11 metres.
Inside it is very roomy but there are only five seats. Don’t worry, Volkswagen is working on six and seven seat versions with the latter getting a 2-3-2 seat arrangement. Moving away from the seats, the ID.BUZZ has a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and another digital display on the centre console, both of which look “like free-floating tablets.”
There will be a whole host of new versions of the ID.BUZZ coming our way between now and 2030 and the Buzz will also be getting techy features like car-to-X communication and ability to download data from the VW cloud which will help it read the road and detect road markings or traffic nearby for the satnav. Being this big, owners will find the Buzz tough to park in today’s tight lanes so the microbus also has a self-parking system.
The electric motor in the ID.BUZZ produces 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. Being an electric car we all know it will offer impressive power and torque, what we all are interested in knowing is a range, which VW isn’t telling us right now. Boo.
For now the ID.BUZZ will be offered in Europe with a US debut coming soon and then, who knows, maybe it could make its way to the Asian and Middle East market because everyone will love to own this simple-yet-glamorous retrolicious van.
