2018 Volvo XC60 Review: A Premium Compact SUV

Introduction

Since the launch of the second-generation Volvo XC90 in 2014, the Swedish brand has transformed its image from unflattering to competitive. Ready to rival its German competitors, the brand has infused character, performance, and style into the 2018 Volvo XC60.

Launch Event

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Dalaman, Turkey, the regional launch was more than a mere reveal; it allowed us and fellow journalists to experience the lifestyle of the XC60’s active target audience through activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, and yoga in the wilderness.

Design and Competition

In its second generation, the Volvo XC60 leads the brand’s design philosophy in the sixty-series model range, competing with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. With a reputation for being one of the bestselling models in the Middle East, the all-new XC60 is set to not only maintain but also surpass previous records.

Sharing the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with the XC90, the all-new XC60 boasts a distinct set of Thor’s Hammer headlights and a familiar silhouette with an ascending window line and prominent tail lamps, ensuring it remains instantly recognizable as a Volvo.

While sharing many dimensions with its predecessor, the wheelbase of the XC60 has been stretched by 2.6 inches. The design features a shorter front overhang, brawnier wheel arches, and sculpted panels, giving it a commanding presence. The 2018 Volvo XC60 is stunning and capable, both on and off-road.

Beautifully appointed and exceptionally designed, the cabin of the second-generation Volvo XC60 exemplifies the brand’s commitment to perfection. It flawlessly combines traditional design elements with contemporary technology, featuring wood inlays, two-tone leather, and a stunning 9-inch infotainment screen that takes center stage.

The elongated wheelbase significantly enhances rear legroom, allowing two adults to sit comfortably with ample legroom, knee room, and headroom. The full-length panoramic roof further enhances the spacious feel for passengers and cargo alike.

  • Steer Assist
  • Blind Spot Detection & Intervention
  • On Coming Lane Mitigation
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Collision Avoidance

These features collectively enhance safety during long drives. The Sensus Connect infotainment system, which supports pinch-to-zoom and swipe gestures, offers convenient access to the home screen. It is paired with a powerful 14-speaker, 1,100-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Mobile connectivity is enhanced with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all variants.

For the gasoline enthusiasts in the UAE, the Volvo XC60 is available in two configurations, T5 and T6, with power outputs of 254 horsepower and 320 horsepower, respectively. The T5 features a turbocharger, while the T6 adds a supercharger, delivering a remarkable 400 Nm of torque.

The fully-loaded inscription trim, equipped with 20-inch alloys and air suspension, ensures a comfortable ride. The XC60 offers adaptive settings, lowering itself by 0.8 inches for greater downforce in Dynamic mode, or raising by 1.5 inches in Off-Road mode.

Set for its Middle Eastern debut, the anticipated T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid will be the most powerful in the XC60 lineup, producing a combined output of 407 horsepower and reaching 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. The 8-speed automatic transmission and All-Wheel Drive platform remain unchanged across the range.
