Ford Mustang: The Iconic Sports Car's Journey

Ford Mustang

Introduction to the Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang first came onto the automotive scene way back in 1964. Over the past 55 years, the Mustang has held the record for being the best-selling two-door sports car, marking a remarkable achievement with over ten million units produced. The Mustang is credited with initiating the Pony class of cars, which includes models like the Camaro and Dodge’s Challenger. Interestingly, the name "Mustang" is derived from the legendary World War 2 fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang, known for its iconic status.

The Mustang's Legacy

Few cars achieve the level of fan following and recognition that the Ford Mustang has garnered. Its name is widely recognized, even by those outside the automotive community. As one of the original muscle cars, the Mustang is offered in both two-door coupe and convertible formats. Notably, Ford has never ceased production of the Mustang, unlike many competitors who paused between generations. Ford's aim was to make the Mustang affordable, allowing a broader audience access to this iconic vehicle. Initially, the company anticipated selling around 100,000 Mustangs in the first year; however, they surpassed that figure in just three months. The one-millionth Mustang was sold just over a year and a half after production started, highlighting the Mustang’s special status.

Generational Improvements and Variants

Over the decades, Ford continuously improved the Mustang to meet public demand. Apart from standard variants, the Mustang is available in several editions, including:

  • Boss
  • Roush
  • Shelby

The sixth-generation Mustang is the latest iteration, introduced in 2015, and is recognized as the most powerful, fastest, and technologically advanced Mustang to date. In markets like the United Arab Emirates, the 2019 Ford Mustang is available in both coupe and convertible forms, with prices starting at:

  • AED 189,000 for coupe variants
  • AED 215,000 for convertible variants
  • AED 250,000 for top trim coupes
  • AED 247,000 for top trim convertibles

Engine Options and Performance

Earlier models of the Mustang featured a V6 engine; however, Ford has since transitioned to more powerful and economical four-cylinder EcoBoost engines. The EcoBoost Mustang is equipped with a 2.3-liter engine producing 310 hp and 434 Nm of torque. The next upgrade includes a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 415 hp and 530 Nm of torque, allowing for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h. For those seeking extreme performance, the 526 hp Shelby GT350R accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 270 km/h.
