Introduction

As fuel prices continue to rise, fuel consumption has become a significant concern for drivers in the UAE. Fortunately, saving money on fuel is not difficult if you follow a specific maintenance routine and adopt responsible driving habits.

Fuel Saving Tips

1. Drive at Moderate Speeds

The recommended speed for optimal fuel conservation is 89 kilometers per hour, which also helps minimize carbon monoxide emissions. Fuel consumption increases significantly if your speed exceeds 90 kilometers per hour.

Avoid frequent acceleration and braking, as these can lead to increased fuel consumption. Additionally, pressing the accelerator pedal too hard can also contribute to higher fuel usage.

2. Check Tire Pressure Every Two Weeks

Tire Pressure Check

You can find the recommended tire pressure listed on a sticker on the driver's door. Inflate the tires to the recommended maximum pressure, and check them every two weeks, reinflating them if necessary.

3. Avoid Sudden Stops

Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to reduce the need for hard braking. Start to slow down as soon as you see a yellow light, allowing for a smooth stop when it turns red.

4. Do Not Keep the Engine Running While Temporarily Stopped

Engine Idling

This habit is common among many Emirati drivers and can significantly affect fuel consumption. It also poses health risks to you and those around the vehicle.

5. Avoid Overfilling the Fuel Tank

Filling the fuel tank to maximum capacity adds approximately 40 kilograms of weight to the car, leading to increased fuel consumption during driving. It’s better to fill the tank to half or three-quarters for more efficient driving.

6. Avoid Carrying Heavy Loads in the Car

Excess Weight

The heavier your car, the more fuel it consumes. If your vehicle has roof racks, remove them when not in use, along with any other extra weight, as you can save around 2% of fuel for every 50 kilograms removed from the car.

7. Try to Avoid Driving in Congestion

Driving during peak hours can significantly increase fuel consumption due to frequent stops and slowdowns. Plan your trips to avoid congested times whenever possible.

8. Replace Your Air Filter When Needed

Air Filter

Replacing a dirty air filter with a clean one can enhance fuel efficiency by up to 10%.

9. Close Windows and Sunroof at High Speeds

Open windows can increase drag on the vehicle while driving at high speeds, leading to higher fuel consumption. To avoid air resistance, make sure to close your car windows.

10. Avoid Short Trips

Short Trips

Frequent short trips can lead to higher fuel consumption. Plan your trips so that you can combine errands into one longer trip instead of several short ones. If your destination is close, consider walking instead of driving.
