2013 Peugeot 508 Review: Performance, Interior, and Verdict

2013 Peugeot 508 Front Side View

The 2013 Peugeot 508 is a fine-looking sedan, but it takes more than good exterior styling to make an impact on the highly-competitive mid-sized sedan segment. We review this car with a spin around Dubai city and highways.

Performance

The Allure full option model we tested features a 1.6-litre VVT four-cylinder turbocharged engine generating 156 BHP and 240NM of torque, paired with a six-speed auto Tiptronic gearbox and cruise control. This engine size makes it one of the few mid-sized sedans with an engine smaller than 2.0L, resulting in comparatively fuel-efficient performance.

Despite the 1.6L engine, the Peugeot 508 delivers impressive acceleration and cruises easily at speed. The handling remains uncompromised, featuring responsive steering and minimal body movement during cornering. Parking is straightforward, thanks to excellent low-speed handling and the inclusion of front and rear sensors with distance measurement.

While Peugeots are known for a firm ride, it's hardly noticeable in the 508. The innovative front suspension system ensures comfort for both the driver and passengers, with minimal engine noise intruding into the cabin.

The driver's seat is positioned higher than in most mid-range sedans, providing an excellent view of the road ahead and exceptionally clear instruments on the head-up display. The steering wheel, equipped with controls for the stereo and speed limiter, can be adjusted for both height and reach, allowing drivers to find a comfortable driving position.

One minor issue we encountered was with the push button start system. It requires the driver to synchronize the brake and the start button, which can be tricky at first. However, once accustomed to it, the process becomes smoother. We recommend that Peugeot enhance this feature for future models.

Interior

To compete effectively in the crowded mid-sized sedan segment, a car must be both spacious and well-equipped. The Peugeot 508 excels in both areas.

There is ample leg and headroom in both the front and back, providing sufficient space for four adults. The seats offer comfort along with rear air conditioning controls.

The boot space is impressive, featuring a wide design that simplifies loading and unloading. It rivals that of other popular sedans, and the rear seats can be folded down for additional space.

The Allure model boasts superior equipment levels, including:

  • Satellite navigation
  • An eight-speaker radio/CD player
  • Hands-free kit
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Electric sunroof with anti-trap facility
  • Side and rear screen blinds

One noteworthy aspect is the design of the cup holders. They are conveniently positioned on the front panel and open like CD players, making them user-friendly for the driver. However, they appear a bit thin and fragile compared to the high quality of other interior components. While they serve their purpose, we suggest sturdier cup holders for future updates.

Verdict

The Peugeot 508 stands out as a strong contender in the mid-sized sedan market, thanks to its excellent performance and equipment levels. With a spacious interior and generous boot space, it is an ideal choice for both family and business use.

In terms of pricing, the full option model costs 105,900 AED in the UAE. It competes closely with the Volkswagen Passat and the Volvo S60 T4. For a detailed comparison, check out our comparative analysis page featuring a spec-to-spec analysis of all three models.
