2016 Mercedes GLE63S - Comprehensive Review
A Brief Historical Overview
The GLE class is the successor to the ML class, launched by Mercedes-Benz to enter the luxury SUV market. The SUV was introduced in the late 1990s to attract consumers with high-end SUV options. Later, AMG took the SUV and presented the ML55 AMG, a sportier variant for enthusiasts. After a few years, the ML was rebranded as the GLE, and we had the opportunity to test drive the GLE63 S.
Exterior Design
The design of the GLE has been updated for the 2016 model year, featuring a new fender and updated front and rear lights. The front end is notably different, while the rest remains consistent. Personally, I appreciated the black AMG alloy wheels, although they are prone to scratches. Overall, the GLE63 embodies the fierce design and performance of a Mercedes. While I prefer the design of the Cayenne, the GLE63 S certainly stands out.
Interior and Safety Features
Inside, it resembles other Mercedes vehicles. The seats are plush, driving is comfortable, and there are touches of leather and soft materials throughout. The steering wheel features Alcantara leather for a better grip. I was not fond of the protruding screen; I’d prefer a retractable option or a design similar to BMW, where the screen is integrated into the dashboard. Overall, the interior gives you that unmistakable Mercedes feel.
Driving Experience
The V8 twin-turbo engine delivers an impressive 577 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque. The S model offers an additional 27 horsepower and 60 Nm compared to the standard version. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h, thanks to its 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The exhaust note is also fantastic, but it does not make for great fuel efficiency, with our test averaging 21L/100km. AMG has equipped it with adaptive suspension and a Sport + mode that truly enhances the sporty driving experience, making you forget that you're in an SUV. Overall, it drives like any sporty sedan.
Summary
The GLE63S is designed for the luxury market. It delivers performance similar to the Cayenne, though it is not a Porsche. Additionally, there is a GLE Coupe model available. This vehicle serves as an excellent alternative to the Cayenne.
