The 2025 GMC Terrain marks a significant update for GMC's entry-level SUV, blending new technology, design, and functionality while retaining some of the familiar elements that have made it popular.
Bold New Design with Truck-Inspired Styling
The all-new Terrain takes a step forward in its design, featuring a more truck-inspired boxy look reminiscent of the first-generation model. This new aesthetic includes a completely redesigned front end with a larger rectangular grille, sharper edges, and more angular lines, giving it a more aggressive stance. The C-shaped LED running lights are retained, but the C-pillar now has a forward slant, similar to the Chevrolet Equinox. The rear end sees a refresh with straighter lines, smaller C-shaped tail lights, and vertically-oriented reflectors, along with a new two-tone roof option that highlights the floating roof motif.
Interior Overhaul with Cutting-Edge Technology
Inside, the 2025 Terrain undergoes a transformation. The most notable change is the introduction of a massive 15-inch vertical digital touchscreen, paired with an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. These displays are standard across all trims and are central to the SUV's tech upgrade, which includes Google built-in software, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot. The new Terrain also does away with the previous push-button shifter, replacing it with a more traditional column-mounted lever for easier gear changes.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the entry-level Elevation trim, which replaces the SLE and SLT models, now comes with more standard features, such as a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and adaptive cruise control. The Terrain also introduces advanced driver-assistance systems like bicycle and pedestrian detection, intersection automated braking, and steering assist for blind-spot avoidance. The interior space has been slightly increased, with more headroom and front-seat legroom, enhancing overall comfort.
Powertrain and Performance Updates
Under the hood, the 2025 Terrain continues with the familiar turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. However, this engine is now paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous nine-speed unit. The all-wheel-drive variant, which will be available at launch, offers a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, while the front-wheel-drive version, set to launch later, comes with a continuously variable transmission and a reduced torque output of 184 pound-feet.
Upcoming AT4 and Denali Models
The rugged AT4 and luxurious Denali trims will join the lineup as 2026 models, bringing more features and capabilities. The AT4 is designed for off-road enthusiasts, equipped with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, a front skid plate, and a specially tuned suspension for rough terrains. It’s the only model with a Terrain drive mode, emphasizing its off-road focus.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Denali trim offers top-tier luxury with a unique grille design, standard 19-inch wheels (with an optional 20-inch upgrade), and upgraded dampers for a smoother ride. Both the AT4 and Denali come with LED headlights and taillights that play animations, adding a touch of modern flair to these high-end models.
