2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Review: Luxury Redefined
Introduction
Mercedes-Benz launched the first S-Class way back in 1972 as a full-size luxury sedan. This car was to have no compromise and would be perched right at the top of the company’s hierarchy, and its name reflected that. The name S-Class comes from the German term “Sonderklasse”, which roughly translates into “Special Class” – and special is exactly what Mercedes-Benz wanted this car to be.
Over four decades later, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class still sets benchmarks for other carmakers to follow. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class bristles with high-end technology, comfort, sophistication, and safety. However, today, the reign of the S-Class is constantly under threat from competent foes such as the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, and Lexus LS.
Exterior
The entire exterior sculpture of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class epitomizes its sophistication and effortless elegance, along with immense road presence.
- The front fascia is dominated by a large chrome grille and suave LED headlights with triple-LED DRL strips.
- The three-pointed star serves as a prominent hood ornament.
- The side silhouette predominantly consists of smooth contours and sleek lines.
- The massive rims and subtly flared wheel arches complement the car's look.
- The elegantly stylized windows and gently sloping roof enhance its regal appearance.
- The rear features large, posh LED taillights and a thick chrome bar on the boot lid.
- Oval, chrome-tipped exhausts are neatly tucked underneath the rear bumper, along with a subtle diffuser.
The exterior dimensions of the S-Class are quite vast, as it is a full-size luxury sedan. Its length is 5.271 meters, width is 1.905 meters, height is 1.498 meters, and wheelbase is 3.165 meters. Thanks to its large proportions, it not only opens up room inside the car but also houses a deep boot with a capacity of 530 liters.
Interior
The interior of the new S-Class is spacious, oozes opulence, technology, and sheer class. As expected from a flagship, the materials used throughout the interior are second to none. The craftsmanship, build quality, and the fit & finish are truly a cut above.

The high-performance S 63 and S 65 AMG feature a twin-turbo V8 and twin-turbo V12, respectively. The latter develops 630 HP and 1,000 Nm of torque and also benefits from AWD assistance. This means that 0-100 km/h in the S 65 AMG comes in just 4.3 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.
