Audi Develops Lunar Rover in Collaboration with Part-Time Scientists
Project Details
In partnership with Part-Time Scientists, Audi announced last year its plans to build a lunar rover intended for the next moon mission. Recently, the company confirmed that the final design of the rover has been completed and plans to begin tests next year.
Modifications to the Rover
- The wheels have been enlarged.
- The rover's weight has been reduced from 38 kg to 30 kg by utilizing 3D aluminum panels.
- All four wheels will be powered electrically.
Rover Testing
The rover will undergo final testing in locations across the Middle East, as the terrain closely resembles that of the moon. It is scheduled for its first launch at the end of 2017, where it will take photographs and capture 360-degree images using four cameras.
Competition with Other Companies
The rover still requires some adjustments, as Audi will compete against approximately 30 rivals by sending it to the moon to travel a minimum distance of 500 meters while capturing high-resolution images to send back to Earth. This effort aims to win the Google Lunar XPRIZE, which offers a $30 million reward and recognition for such missions.
Chances of Success
With a team like Part-Time Scientists, I believe Audi has a strong chance of winning this prize.
