Introduction
Abu Dhabi Police is implementing stricter penalties in the emirate after seizing 1,573 vehicles operating as illegal taxis in the first four months of 2019. Operating with a zero-tolerance policy, the police stated that they will not entertain illegal taxis in the emirate, as it is against traffic laws.
Concerns Raised by Police
Colonel Mubarak Awad bin Mahiroum, director of the transport security department at Abu Dhabi Police, noted that "Some of the drivers of these illegal taxis may not have licenses issued by the UAE authorities, and some might even be staying in the country illegally."
Investigation Findings
Police investigations reveal the following about illegal taxi services:
- Most illegal taxis are owned by individuals or companies.
- These companies employ unlicensed drivers.
- Illegal taxis typically charge AED10 per person.
- Each car can carry up to four people at a time.
Legal Penalties for Illegal Taxi Operations
According to the Federal Traffic Law, the penalty for illegally transporting passengers includes:
- A fine of AED3,000.
- 24 traffic points.
- Vehicle impoundment for 30 days.
