Hyundai and Bee'ah: A Partnership to Enhance Hydrogen Mobility in the UAE
The Agreement and Collaboration
Hyundai Motor has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bee'ah to enhance a trial hydrogen mobility project in the United Arab Emirates and explore collaboration opportunities. Bee'ah stands out as a leader in sustainability in the Middle East, having introduced innovative solutions to convert waste into energy while striving for zero waste to achieve sustainability goals.
Waste Management and Hydrogen Technologies
As part of its waste management efforts, Bee'ah operates a fleet of over 2,000 waste collection vehicles, including electric vehicles. The company continues to explore the feasibility of using hydrogen as fuel for its vehicles, focusing on achieving a future of emission-free transportation in smart cities.
Details of the Pilot Project
The memorandum stipulates the trial operation of a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck in the emirates of Sharjah and Dubai. Hyundai Motor and Bee'ah will provide technical services and human resources to explore collaboration opportunities in hydrogen mobility, leveraging Hyundai Motor's expertise and advanced technologies.
XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck
As part of the pilot project, Hyundai Motor will supply a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck to Bee'ah, which will be used for daily operations. The collaboration aims to test the viability of the fuel cell electric truck for everyday use, preparing for a future replacement of traditional trucks.
Hyundai Motor launched the XCIENT Fuel Cell, the world's first heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell electric truck, which is currently operating in six countries. It boasts exceptional performance, with 49 trucks having traveled over 8 million kilometers.
Truck Performance
In the pilot project, Hyundai Motor provides a fuel cell truck to Bee'ah, featuring a driving range exceeding 400 kilometers even when fully loaded. The truck is equipped with two fuel cell systems, each with a capacity of 90 kW, and an electric motor with a capacity of 350 kW.
Hyundai's Commitment to Hydrogen
Hyundai Motor has focused on hydrogen for 25 years, with the XCIENT Fuel Cell utilizing a pioneering hydrogen fuel cell system. The company aims to expand the applications of fuel cells globally, including in commercial and personal vehicles, maritime transport, aerospace, and energy generation.

Bee'ah's Sustainability Efforts
Bee'ah has successfully set new standards for sustainable solutions in the Middle East by transforming waste at a rate of up to 90% in the emirate of Sharjah. The company aims to support regional sustainability goals, particularly in the UAE, by exploring the use of hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions.
UAE Hydrogen Strategy 2050
During the COP28 conference, the UAE announced its National Hydrogen Strategy 2050, aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The country anticipates a demand for 2.7 million tons of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031.
Hyundai as a Key Player in the Energy Transition
Hyundai Motor is taking the lead in the energy transition in the Middle East, having started its initiatives by exporting two fuel cell buses from ELEC CITY to Saudi Arabia in 2020, and expanded its operations in the country by exporting the XCIENT truck in 2021.
