1951 – Mercedes-Benz 220
The Mercedes-Benz 220 was an alternative to the MB 300 model that was launched by the maker at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1951. Both models were launched together which re-cemented the make’s position in the automotive industry after the Second World War. The 220 did not create a stir as much as the 300 but this model proved to be very successful due to the latest six-cylinder engine.

1959 – Mercedes-Benz 220 – 300 SE Long
The 220, 220S and 220 SE models have significance in Mercedes’ history. These models were nicknamed ‘fintail models’ due to a fintail present at the rear spoiler. These fintails proved to be highly useful when parking in reverse (helping in judging distance from the rear) and from then on they were officially known as ‘sight lines’. Moreover, MB fitted these models with impact absorbing crumple zones – a world first feature back then. The MB 300 SE was fitted with air suspension and the new automatic transmission.

1963 – Mercedes-Benz 600
Mercedes-Benz replaced the 300 with the 600 model at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show and this car became the new flagship from the German brand. This car is powered by a 6.3 liter V8 engine and delivered a top speed of more than 200 km/h. It had air suspension, automatic transmission and power steering. This car came with 5 or 6 seats depending on VIP customer demand. There was also a 70cm longer variant used as state limousine.

1965 – Mercedes-Benz 250 S – 300 SEL
The Mercedes-Benz 250 S replaced the fintail models as the second-fiddle to the flagship 600. This model had ‘generously proportioned’ windows. Moreover, this model had air suspension as well. The 300 SEL model was powered the same 6.3 liter V8 taken from the 600 which made the 300 have sports car feel.

1972 – Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The name ‘S-Class’ we all know now was introduced to the world in 1972. The first ever S-Class had innovative safety features like fitting the fuel tank above the rear axle for protection against collisions, four-spoke steering wheel, side windows to protect against dirt, large headlights and ribbed taillamps to fight dirt. The trend continued in 1978 with the introduction of ABS – a world first back then.
