New Porsche Boxster: Embracing the 718 Badge with Turbocharged Engines
Recently, Porsche announced that the new Boxster will embrace the new 718 badge. The changes include:
- All-new turbocharged engines replacing the 3.0 liter flat-six engines.
- Improved fuel efficiency and power without increasing engine size.
Porsche has revealed the new engine specifications for the Boxster and Boxster S:
Engine Specifications
- Boxster: 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged boxer engine producing 300 BHP and 380 Nm of torque.
- Boxster S: 2.5 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged boxer engine producing 350 BHP and 420 Nm of torque.
Both models now produce 35 BHP more than their predecessors, with the Boxster producing 100 Nm more than before, while the Boxster S produces 60 Nm extra. This is a significant enhancement considering the engine size.
Fuel Efficiency and Performance
The fuel efficiency figures are not available yet, but Porsche states that efficiency has increased by 14 percent. This improvement is partly due to the new PDK transmission that incorporates virtual gearing, allowing:
- Two gears to be selected simultaneously.
- Clutch slipping between the gears to introduce new gear ratios.
The new engines also enhance performance, propelling the new Boxster and Boxster S from 0-60 mph in:
- Boxster: 4.5 seconds.
- Boxster S: 4.0 seconds.
This represents an improvement of 0.7 seconds and 0.5 seconds over the previous models, respectively.
Exterior and Interior Changes
In addition to performance improvements, the new 718 features notable changes:
- Exterior: Redesigned front end with new LED lights and larger air intakes.
- Interior: Updated dashboard and infotainment system.
Both models are set to go on sale in mid-year, with starting prices around:
- $57,000 USD for the Boxster.
- $70,000 USD for the Boxster S.
