Changes to Speed Limits in Abu Dhabi and Their Impact on Drivers
The Importance of Speed in Accidents
Speed is a leading cause of accidents not only in the UAE but globally. Despite many drivers in the UAE exceeding the speed limits indicated on road signs, serious or fatal accidents remain relatively uncommon.
Speed Monitoring in the UAE
All highways and roads across the UAE are now monitored by radar systems to catch drivers exceeding the speed limits. Unlike many countries, these radars are calibrated to allow a certain speed above the posted limit before capturing the driver's speed. For example, if a speed limit sign indicates 100 km/h, drivers can legally travel up to 120 km/h without being caught by the speed camera. In certain areas of Abu Dhabi, a maximum speed of 160 km/h is permitted on roads such as:
- Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road
- Al Ain-Abu Dhabi Road
Upcoming Changes in Abu Dhabi
All of these previous regulations are set to change soon in Abu Dhabi, as the police will completely revise the allowed speed limits starting August 12. For instance, if a speed limit on a road is set at 100 km/h, drivers will not be permitted to exceed this limit, even by a small margin like 101 km/h, as the speed cameras will start capturing them.
Removal of Current Speed Limit Signs
Current speed limit signs will be removed from almost all areas of Abu Dhabi. Reports indicate that the police have confirmed that the previously mentioned roads (Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and Al Ain in Abu Dhabi) will not be affected by the new regulations, allowing a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
