Skoda Superb Review: A Luxurious Liftback Competing with the Best
Competing against the likes of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu, and Hyundai Sonata, the Skoda Superb is the most expensive model in the brand's line-up in this segment. The Skoda Superb made its debut in the early 2000s, with the first-generation model based on the Volkswagen Group's B5 platform. The second-generation Superb launched in 2008, built upon VW's PQ46 platform, which it shared with the Volkswagen Passat. Unlike its predecessor, the second-gen model was also available in a station wagon body style in select markets.
Skoda updated the Superb in 2013, introducing a facelift with cosmetic changes and comfort features. At the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, the brand unveiled the latest, third-generation Superb, utilizing the widely adopted MQB architecture from its parent company. This new Skoda Superb is larger, more modern, and equipped with advanced onboard technologies and enhanced safety features. Similar to its predecessor, the third-gen Superb is available as both a sedan and a station wagon in many markets (excluding the UAE).
Exterior
The Skoda Superb is categorized as a "liftback," with a tailgate that opens like a hatchback. This distinction is not apparent until you open the hatch. Compared to its softer second-generation predecessor, the exterior of the newer model features sharper creases and pronounced ridges, giving it a more chiseled appearance. While some may have preferred the old Superb's smooth styling, the new model captivates with its dynamic poise.
Dimensions
The dimensions of the third-gen Skoda Superb are as follows:
- Length: 4.861 meters
- Width: 1.864 meters
- Wheelbase: 2.841 meters
- Trunk Volume: 625 liters
Unlike its distinctive predecessor, the new Superb resembles a larger Octavia, as Skoda aims to establish a "family look" across its newer models. The front fascia features the familiar Skoda grille, contoured hood, sleek projector headlamps, and a sporty bumper with large, horizontally-placed fog lights and a comprehensive central air-intake opening. The side view showcases the Superb's longer wheelbase with a prominent "tornado line" and "wing line," complemented by smart 19-inch wheels, muscular front fenders, and sloped C-pillars. The rear houses edgy LED tail lights and a sculpted bumper with an integrated air diffuser.
Interior
Inside the new Skoda Superb, notable features include vast passenger space and excellent build quality. Almost every surface and trim piece feels premium compared to the car's price tag. Skoda excels in fit-and-finish, practicality, and comfort. The interior design is clutter-free, with fewer buttons and switches than some rivals.
Features
The Superb is available with a range of features, including:
- Adaptive Bi-xenon headlights
- Adaptive dampers
- Individual drive modes
- All-LED interior lighting
- Leather upholstery
- 12-speaker Canton sound system
- Digital instrument panel
- Push-button engine start
- Ventilated front seats
- Electronic parking brake
- Tri-zone climate control
- Motion-activated boot release
- Mood lighting
- Cruise control
- All-round parking sonar with rearview camera
Safety features include eight airbags, electronic stability & traction control, and blind-spot monitoring.
Engine and Performance
The new Superb is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 220 hp and 350 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. This allows the Superb to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds, achieving a top speed of 245 km/h, making it one of the fastest cars in its class.
Verdict
In the UAE, the new Skoda Superb is available exclusively in the top-spec L&K trim, with a price of AED 143,500.
