Currently, there are two things that really excite me in the automotive industry: electric vehicles and the Chinese automotive industry. Infiniti Middle East managed to spot this trend and invited us to the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show where they revealed the concept of what will become the brand’s new design language. Infiniti's Approach to Electric Vehicles
All manufacturers have announced or are announcing their plans regarding EVs. While some are currently presenting and/or selling EVs or promising that by year "y" they will convert their entire lineup to electric cars, Infiniti has a completely different and very interesting approach to the topic.
Qs Inspiration at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show
During the presentation of the Qs Inspiration at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, I learned that the luxury Japanese brand is focusing on design since electric cars provide a world of new possibilities. This refreshing approach caught my attention. We were also lucky to have a very engaging round table discussion with Karim Habib, the head of design for Infiniti— the man behind this concept.
Design Insights
During our discussion, Karim Habib mentioned a couple of interesting points regarding the importance of the design of electric vehicles:
- The interior of electric cars provides more room for passengers since the floor is flat (where the batteries are seated).
- This design allows different configurations for the rear and front seats, focusing more on the driver and passenger experience.
- The exterior design features a higher profile, giving a more elegant look.
- With no engine, the size of the hood can be reduced, which enhances the interior space of the cabin.
The Essence of Qs Inspiration Design
What is this Qs Inspiration design all about?
In a nutshell, the Qs Inspiration is a sport sedan concept showcasing hints of how Infiniti's electric vehicles will look like. Infiniti plans to launch their electric vehicles within a three-year period, suggesting we will also start seeing these design elements in their petrol lineup.
The Qs Inspiration is characterized by clean and minimalistic lines with a higher driving position, aimed at delivering high performance alongside electrified all-wheel drive. This indicates that Infiniti's electric vehicles will focus on high performance and will include All-Wheel Drive capabilities.
Connected and Autonomous Driving
With the Qs Inspiration, Infiniti is also considering more connected and autonomous driving technologies, providing both the driver and passengers with enhanced comfort and technology within the cabin.
Conclusion
After sitting and learning more about this concept, it feels like Infiniti has cracked the code the right way. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this concept translates into actual cars.
